What You Should Know About Parabens

Posted on

Parabens. Many people have heard the term but not everyone is aware of its implications. These synthetic preservatives are used in cosmetics, deodorant, soaps, shampoos, conditioners and skin care products, and go by names that twist the tongue like methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben and isobutylparaben.

Parabens are used to help products survive for long periods of time, but they are also chemicals that your body absorbs, and they can potentially have dire effects on your skin.

In a 2013 Medscape article, it was stated that parabens can cause allergic skin reactions, which usually show up in the form of an eczematous rash, where the skin becomes itchy, and can also be crusty and scaly. The authors of this article also noted that in some cases there have been reports of immediate immunoglobulin Emediated allergic reactions (Immunoglobulin E (IgE) is an antibody that plays a significant role in allergic diseases such as asthma), and has resulted in skin hives and in a rare case, bronchospasm, which is the sudden constriction of the passageways through which air goes through the nose and mouth.

Additionally, although more research still needs to be done, studies have linked parabens to a higher risk of breast cancer, male reproductive system issues, endocrine (glandular) system issues, and even premature aging.
